Dammusi are the typical Pantelleria rural building; their origin is dated from
the Arabic people domination.
Simple and practical, with an excellent habitability, dammusi have survived during
the centuries and up today they are the best buildings of the island. Builded with volcanic stone, dammusi are just jewels of architecture.
Thanks to the construction technique and to the thickness of walls, from 8 centimetres
to 2 metres, dammusi enjoy an excellent thermic and acoustics isolation.
The roof is characterized by white colour and domes.
Dome can be of different size and each one belongs to a room in which You can
find different vault shapes.
Furthermore the dome increases the height of first floor rooms and contributes
to maintain inside environments cool.
It moreover collects rain water (one of the most precious goods) and flows it,
by a piping, inside appropriate cisterns.
The internal of dammuso is divided in little vains, everyone characterized by
a paticolar Arabic origin name.
Also the term “dammuso” derives from latin word “domus” and Arabic word “dammus”
which have the same meaning : house.
